Easy WP SEO vs Measure My SEO

November 6, 2011 · 0 comments

Measure My SEO is yet another WordPress SEO plugin for on-page optimization, released last June. It does many of the things the other plugins do, but, like ClickBump SEO, it lacks automation of some on-page elements.

But, it doesn’t analyze nearly the number of SEO factors that Easy WP SEO does, and has far fewer features, as shown in the table.

What Measure My SEO Has That Easy WP SEO Doesn’t

Auto Updating of SEO Score

Measure My SEO Auto UpdatesMeasure My SEO has the unique feature of automatically updating the SEO score of your post or page as you’re editing it. You can specify in the plugin settings the update interval, which defaults to 30 seconds.

At first this seemed kind of neat, but it quickly became annoying to me. I ended up turning it off while I was testing the plugin.

This is purely a matter of personal preference, of course. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. You might like it.

But I found it to be kind of a gimmick. All it really does is save you from having to click the “Save Draft” or “Update” buttons to refresh the SEO score. I always save posts regularly while I’m editing, so for me this feature doesn’t have much value.

Measure My SEO: The Good

Configurable SEO Scoring Factors

As with Easy WP SEO, you can turn on or off the SEO factors that impact the SEO score of your posts and pages. You can also specify the keyword density you’re aiming for, though the way it’s implemented is a bit limited (see below).

Measure My SEO: The Bad

Measure My SEO Doesn’t Score The Entire HTML Document

No surprise here, as Easy WP SEO is still the only SEO plugin available that can assess the complete HTML document in which posts and pages are embedded. Like the other plugins, Measure My SEO is only aware of the post or page content entered into the edit box in the WordPress admin interface.

Since it can’t “see” the complete HTML page, Measure My SEO requires you to enter meta and title tags into the plugin’s interface (see below).

Inaccurate Keyword Density Calculation

Just like SEOPressor, ClickBump SEO and SEO Beast, Measure My SEO does not accurately determine keyword density for key phrases of multiple words.

There is a detailed argument about why this is such a serious shortcoming on the Easy WP SEO Plugin home page.

Limited Keyword Density Range

While the plugin does let you specify the keyword density you’re aiming for, it confines it to the density you specify, plus or minus 1 percent. So, for example, if you set the density to 4%, it will increase your SEO score if the density is between 3% and 5%.

This isn’t a huge negative, and many people will be fine with that. It just so happens I like to have my keyword density between 1.5% and 4%, so it’s impossible to specify that exact range. I could live with 2% to 4%, but I’d really rather be able to specify a minimum and maximum density.

Lame Analysis of Post Titles

Oddly, Measure My SEO is completely unaware of the title you enter for your post in the WordPress admin area. It provides it’s own field for the title, in which you have to enter the post title a second time. If you don’t, as far as this plugin is concerned, your post doesn’t have a title at all. It will deduct from your post’s SEO score unless you enter a title in it’s own field.

None of the other SEO plugins that score post titles (Easy WP SEO, ClickBump SEO and SEO Beast) require you to do this. I think it’s a rather bizarre oversight on the part of the plugin creators.

Incidentally, the field for the title is called “meta title” tag. Huh? The title tag (<title>) is most definitely NOT a meta tag!

Measure My SEO Meta Panel

Unaware of Meta Tags

As with post titles, Measure My SEO is unaware of meta tags (description and keywords) that you might have set up in your theme or with another plugin. Again, the plugin provides its own fields for the meta tags in its interface.

That means if you’re using meta tags, you’re going to have to copy and paste them from your theme or other plugin into Measure My SEO’s fields. Otherwise it won’t credit your SEO score for having them. That could turn into a major hassle if you want to use the plugin on a site that already has a lot of posts, as you’ll have to do it for each and every post.

It should be noted that neither title nor meta tags are actually placed in the HTML by Measure My SEO. These fields are there only so that the plugin will know the content of these tags. So you MUST have a mechanism built into your theme or through another SEO plugin to actually add these tags to your pages.

Measure My SEO Has No Automatic Optimization

If you want keyword decoration, your keyword in image ALT tags, or external links made nofollow, you’ll have to do these things manually. Easy WP SEO, however, can do them all for you automatically.

Price and Guarantee

Measure My SEO costs $49.95 for a multi-site license. Easy WP SEO is currently only $37.

And, Measure My SEO only comes with a 30 day money-back guarantee. With Easy WP SEO, you have a full 60 days to try it out.

Easy WP SEO vs Measure My SEO: The Verdict

Easy WP SEO is the clear winner here. It has far more features than Measure My SEO, and scores your content more accurately, since it analyzes the entire HTML document for posts and pages, and it’s keyword density calculation is more accurate.

Measure My SEO also doesn’t provide the automation that Easy WP SEO does. Besides making you do keyword decoration and putting keywords in image ALT tags manually, it also forces you to re-enter title and meta tag data into it’s own interface, a needless inconvenience.

In addition, Easy WP SEO costs less and offers a money-back guarantee that’s twice as long.

Easy WP SEO is clearly the superior choice, in terms of both functionality and value.
